Noting TV and Film depictions of journalism. Seeing the word type reflected in successive lines – then moving hem closer together to make pictures. More commonly seen in the media as ‘Editor’ or ‘Private Investigator’ etc. Seeing ‘Type’ written on the window of an office door where it can be seen in reverse from inside the room. Examining the ‘block’ areas of letters in the word Type. Also looking at fundamental collections – letters, words, phrases… fundamental forms (which there may not be!) and two-word phrases that include the word ‘type’ – these may spring to mind when the word TYPE is presented on its own. Expanding ideas more to see what is available in the realms of ink and light. Connection made between Red and Black being +ve and -ve and the way that type changes between +ve and -ve mechanical versions as it is processed. Looking at the structure of moveable type, the process of creating it and the concepts involved in its use. Extracting ideas about the ‘back room’ of type – how it is used within the typographic industry as opposed to how it is seen by the end user in modern, computerised times. Gathering some thoughts about approaches. Expanding various options of the ways to make the word TYPE in a distinctive font. Here ‘Construction’, ‘Shape’, ‘Proportion’, ‘Modelling’, ‘Weight’, ‘Terminals’ and ‘Decoration’ are briefly touched upon. The Cover Trying out some basic variances of fonts to see what’s what. This would not look like a normal article – it might be messy, or look absurd so its look would clash, perhaps. My thoughts at this point are of an article that demonstrates the aspects of typography like tracking, leading, kerning, justification etc within the article as you read it. The original Alice stories have been viewed as satire on 17th century contemporary mathematical invention ( ) so it would be interesting to translate that idea into one about the ‘absurdity’ of Fonts… all in good fun, of course! Justification – like in a trial? (Justifiable Cause to steal jam tarts?).There are some other occurences in the Alice stories that could be used… The point would be to make each typography feature in the story memorable to the reader by parody, absurdity or other means to surprise them. The heart ♥ character (queen of hearts?) and the idea of ‘Late’ being for a very important date… the copy deadline. An article could be a journey through this strangeness meeting characters (the ¶ Pilrow, for example) and finding situations like the ‘T’ Party (using the word ‘Part’ as in gap between letters… which is kerning).

Alice is also Alice in Wonderland which is full of strange things… a bit like typography is. Here’s how I though all this might work… “A is for Alice” is a musical show.

I had one of those ‘that’s a good idea’ moments as I got into bed so I mode some quick notes which read…Ĭomposition- you will be marked on your ‘Composition’ said the typesetter I could use Illustrator for individual Glyphs – that would be enough for this assignment as it’s only the cover title that needs bespoke design Just Before Going to Sleep…
